The Garden Creature Collection
Nearly half of all insects in the world are beetles, they are the group of insects with the largest species. Classified in the order Coleoptera, Aristotle gave them their name for the hardened shield-like pair of protective wings called elytra that cover their membranous flight wings. During flight, the elytra are spread apart and the two flight wings are unfolded and extended. Beetles come in a variety of shapes and colors, the red "ladybug" being a familiar favorite, and range in size from miniscule to giants found in the tropics up to six inches long.
I was always out collecting bugs when I was a kid. I had a butterfly net and a glass jar my mother punched air holes in. I'd make a great terrarium house for them to live in. Got to admit the glass jar wouldn't be a thing you'd give a kid today...but we're talking the 1950's...Leslie Evans
