In the Middle Ages dogs were essential to the hunt. More than any other animal, the dog symbolized fidelity because of their devotion to their masters. According to 14th century writers, two kinds of hounds were used: greyhounds, for their swiftness and keen eyesight and running hounds for stamina and noise, (plenty of barking.)
